Setting a time once a week for a mind dump can not only be a life saver but a time saver as well. How many times do you stop and think about what you’re thinking about? I tried this. Wow, what a mess!
Jumbled thoughts. Unclear, clouded, and indecisive thoughts. I feel like I have so much going on inside my brain sometimes. All I can picture is this chick running around inside my head on crack.
I’m constantly reminding myself of all the things I need to get done on a mental loop. Then I add in ideas I have, rehashing an argument with my boyfriend, figuring out what I’m going to make for dinner, and where did i put my freaking keys?
I feel like I’m trying to keep an Evernote program running in my brain and getting more uptight by the minute. If I don’t start writing it down I do crazy stuff like putting my phone in the fridge or the ketchup in the bathroom cupboard.

Having a mind dump is my choice of therapy. Get all that crap out of my head and down on paper. This gives me a clean slate where I can find clarity. Having clarity gives me the ability to be more productive and get more accomplished. I can think more clearly, my memory is sharper, and I’m much more able to stay focused.
I would like to share with you what clarity is, and why I have such a passion for achieving it.
The official definition of clarity is clear or clearness.
Clarity of thought is simply clear thinking. Having a clear mind.

Doing a brain dump clears your mind. You will gain the ability to think about things that are more important than an ongoing shopping list. You will open your mind up to new creative ideas. The thoughts you have will no longer be a jumbled disjointed mess.
Better ability to concentrate
You will no longer get mentally sidetracked by mental clutter when you need to be focused at work or on a project. Focusing on anything with a cluttered mind is impossible to sustain for any length of time.
I remember a time when I was actually proud of myself for not needing a list. I thought I was pretty cool being able to juggle a million and one things in my head. In reality, things didn’t get done on time or at all. I would get so overwhelmed sometimes and nothing would get done. Of course the stress increased along with the panic attacks. Nervous breakdown anyone?
After starting to do mind dumps I actually started remembering names. I’ve always just assumed I wasn’t good with names. But not anymore! I can actually remember them. I remember what I did last week. Don’t laugh, it was a real thing. It would literally take me several minutes to remember what I did just 2 nights before
No more panic attacks. No more overwhelm. Many times this is caused by simply not dealing with all the crap in your head. It just keeps looping around and around. Once you dump it all out, it’s like a huge weight is lifted off your shoulders.
You will be amazed how much more you will accomplish. You will no longer get sidetracked. You will have the mental focus to get things accomplished quickly and more efficiently. Half finished projects and chores will be a thing of the past.
How To Do A Mind Dump
All you need to do your mind dump is pen and paper. A trigger list can also be helpful but not necessary. This is simply a premade list you can have handy that can help trigger your mind of things for you to write down.
I’ve made a copy of my trigger list available for you to download below. I’ve also included a blank one you can personalize to your life.
Mind dump steps:
- Get your pen and paper out and just start writing.
- Don’t stop or pause to think. Don’t worry if it’s a jumbled mess that makes little sense. The more you write the clearer it will be.
- Don’t stop writing until there’s no more to write
- Then scan your trigger list to see if it inspires you to write more.
- When you are all done, walk away. Don’t read it right now. Just take a break.
- When you’re ready to go back and read it, do so.
- Extract any nuggets of gold out of it, make a to do list, grocery list, etc…
- If there’s nothing else you want to save in there then throw it away
You’ve just completed your first mind dump! How often should you do a mind dump? As often as necessary. Try not to wait until you crack to remember to do it. The ultimate goal is to not put the clutter back in there. Get into the habit of keeping track of everything on an app or on paper.
B. Mind dump journal
Those who do daily journaling tend to have less problems with overload. This is because they are on a daily cycle of removing clutter from their minds. They don’t wait until sh*t hits the fan to do their mind dumps. This is something I’m trying to get better at myself.
Just start with 5 minutes every morning. Before everyone else in the house wakes up is best. Have a little quiet time and write. You can try different journal prompts. I love these but only use them on occasion.
I tend to just write about what’s going on in my life at the moment. I find this more helpful to me. If you don’t want anyone to read it just set up a password protected file on your phone. If you want to write on paper, take a picture of what you want to keep private and destroy the hard copy.
Your thoughts are no one else’s business. Be okay with that.
Are you an idea ninja? A million and one ideas in your head? Many times we’ll have all these great ideas but we never write them down. These ideas end up forgotten and never acted on. Write them down.
Wherever you are write them down. Keep a small notebook handy. Download Evernote on your phone. It’s the perfect tool for this when there’s nothing handy to write on. This is a great way to keep your mind uncluttered.
