When was the last time you went barefoot outdoors? If you’re anything like the rest of us it has probably been a very long time. Maybe even years for some of you.
Very rarely do we come into direct contact with the earth anymore. When I first heard about earthing (or grounding as it’s sometimes referred to), I realized I didn’t either.
I am an avid gardener. So during the growing season I would at least have my hands in the dirt quite a lot. All you gardeners out there know how great it feels to have your hands in the dirt.
I always felt so relaxed and ‘grounded’ while gardening. I never questioned why this was. So when I learned about earthing I had a real ‘aha moment’.
What is earthing?
Earthing or grounding, is the process of your body absorbing free electrons from the earth’s surface.
Our bodies are made up largely by water and minerals which makes us highly conductive. When we come into direct contact with the free electrons on the earth’s surface, our bodies easily absorb them.
The earth’s electrons spread over and into our bodies stabilizing our body’s internal electrical environment.
Earthing in history:
Earthing is something our ancestors did naturally by going barefoot outdoors. When they did wear shoes, they had leather soles made from hides, which were still semi conductive.
They also didn’t wear gloves while gardening, or working outdoors. Out of necessity, they spent many hours outdoors each day coming into contact with the earth.
Earthing in modern times:
Today in modern society it is not necessary, or even possible for most of us to spend so much time outdoors. Now it’s considered a luxury when we have the time and energy to do so.
Some ways we isolate ourselves from the earth:
- Wearing plastic or rubber soled shoes.
- Spending most of our time indoors at work or home with flooring such as wood, laminate, plastic, and asphalt.
- When kneeling down on the ground while gardening, we use plastic mats to cushion our knees.
- Wearing gloves that are insulating our hands from the earth’s electrical field when we work outside or in the garden to protect our hands and nails.
- We wear flip flops to the beach. Many of us never taking them off.
- Seldom going barefoot outdoors.
Some of us go years without connecting with the earth
Scientists noticed how much better people felt after going barefoot or working with their hands in the soil and decided to figure out why. Here are some benefits they discovered about earthing:
Earthing benefit 1- Improved Sleep Quality
Research shows that nighttime grounding reduces sleep disturbances thus improving sleep quality.
Subjects in the study reported:
- Falling asleep more quickly
- Waking up fewer times at night
- Having less issues with morning fatigue
- Increased daytime energy levels 1A 1B
Earthing Benefit 2 – Reduced Inflammation
Earthing significantly reduces inflammation in the body. Inflammation is the culprit behind almost every modern chronic illness.
Electrons are thought to act as natural antioxidants by neutralizing positively charged inflammatory free radicals.
So just think about this for a minute. If inflammation is the source of most of our chronic illnesses, and earthing reduces this inflammation, earthing then, is a great prevention of these illnesses. 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, 2E, 2F
Earthing Benefit 3 – Reduced Pain
Most of the pain we feel in our bodies stems from some form of inflammation. If we are reducing inflammation by earthing, we are reducing this source of pain in our bodies.
Earthing Benefit 4 – Accelerated Healing
Grounding reduces and often prevents most signs of inflammation following injury: redness, heat, swelling, pain, and loss of function

Rapid resolution of painful chronic inflammation was confirmed in 20 case studies using medical infrared imaging. 4B,
Earthing Benefit 5 – Normalizes Cortisol Rhythm
- Control blood sugar levels
- Regulate metabolism
- Reduce inflammation
- Assist with memory formulation
- Control salt and water balance
- Control blood pressure
Elevated levels of cortisol can lead to:
- High blood pressure
- Muscle weakness
- Changes in mood, irritability
- Rapid weight gain
- Back pain
- Decreased concentration
- Impaired memory
- Female facial hair or female balding
- Poor skin healing
- Menstrual abnormalities
- Blood sugar dysregulation/high blood sugar
- Decreased bone mineral density
- Easy bruising
Results indicate that grounding the human body to earth (“earthing”) during sleep reduces night-time levels of cortisol and re-synchronizes cortisol hormone secretion more in alignment with the natural 24-hour circadian rhythm profile. 5A, 5B
Earthing Benefit 6 – Eradicates Effects of Dirty Electricity
What is Dirty Electricity?
adverse non-ionizing radiation (a-NIR) from electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure emanating from certain power, electrical and wireless devices commonly found in the home, workplace, school and community. 6A
This study demonstrates that grounding essentially eliminates the ambient voltage induced on the body from common electricity power sources. 6B
Earthing Benefit 7 – Less blood viscosity (all heart related issues)
Grounding increases the surface charge on RBCs and thereby reduces blood viscosity and clumping. Grounding appears to be one of the simplest and yet most profound interventions for helping reduce cardiovascular risk and cardiovascular events. 7A
- Regulates mood MB1
- Improved heart rate variability MB2
- Reduced clumping of red blood cells
- Benefits those with asthma and other respiratory issues
- Great for alleviating symptoms of jet lag
- Relaxation (due to changes in the autonomic nervous system) which happens instantly MB3
- Important for relaxation, health maintenance and disease prevention. MB4
Earthing How To: How to get connected to the earth
Spending time outdoors barefoot is the easiest and cheapest way to ground yourself. Earthing for 30 minutes each day should be your minimum goal.
Many people take time on their lunch breaks to spend a little time earthing. Go outdoors to eat your lunch. Take off your socks and shoes and relax a little.
There are many grounding products on the market today. Any of these products will assist you in the grounding process: There are some really great products listed below found at earthing.com
- Body bands and more…
Try earthing (or grounding) today. See how you feel. The first and almost immediate benefit I noticed was complete relaxation. This is my go-to method to decompress and eliminate stress in my life.
