Your mindset is how you think, feel, and react to everything in your life. The mindset you have today has been formed throughout your life from events and experiences you have lived through.
These conscious and unconscious beliefs have programmed your mind to think, act, and react to situations in a certain way. Creating a pattern in your life.
Do you ever ask yourself why:
- You keep repeating the same mistakes over and over in your life?
- You feel stuck and can’t seem to change your circumstances?
- You can’t get out of debt, or save money?
- You can’t move forward in your career?
- No matter what diet you try, you can’t lose weight and keep it off?
These patterns replay in our lives continually. Sometimes we see them, sometimes we don’t. It’s usually not until the pain of our results causes us to get to a breaking point, that we start seeking out answers.
How do you change your results?
Change your mindset.
How do you achieve this?
- Change your thoughts.
- Change your self talk.
- Change your lifestyle / environment.
- Change your focus.
Your Thoughts affect your Mindset
Recognizing your thoughts
I periodically track my thoughts. Usually I will pick a day where I don’t have much going on. I will set a timer for 30 minutes. When the timer goes off I write down whatever I was thinking about at the time. Then I reset my timer and repeat the process.
Sometimes I pick days that are super hectic to do this. I don’t worry so much about writing my thoughts down on these days. I just notice them.
What this does is train your mind to notice the thoughts you have. We don’t even notice many of the thoughts we have throughout our day. They are such an ingrained part of us.
After awhile the timer isn’t even necessary.
Listening to and analyzing your thoughts is key to discovering what’s holding you back and limiting you in your life.
Where do your thoughts come from?
Many times the thoughts you have stem from childhood experiences. Sometimes they may come from believing what some idiot in a past relationship convinced you of.
Figuring out where they come from can help you see how wrong they are. Believing a new truth will set you free. Get rid of that bondage that has kept you tied in knots.
Only you have control over your thoughts. Take that control. Determine your own future.
How do your thoughts make you feel?
Every thought you have creates a feeling. That feeling then creates more similar thoughts etc… etc… it’s a vicious circle.
I’ve had complete day long rants in my head before. It served no purpose except to keep me stuck in dissatisfaction, anger, resentment and total chaos.
Don’t get me wrong. I believe it’s important to “feel your feels”. Just don’t get stuck in that space. Don’t allow those negative thoughts to become your norm.
Set a wallowing limit for yourself.
How do your thoughts affect your actions?
The actions you do or don’t take in your life can all be traced back to your thoughts. These thoughts if left unchecked play havoc with the actions you do or don’t take in your life. These actions then create your results.
Here’s an Example:
Thought – “I’ll never get out of debt .”
Feelings this thought may cause –
- “Why try its pointless?’
Action or inaction –
- Keep overspending
- Don’t set a budget
- Don’t work on a plan to get out of debt
- Don’t read books or take classes to educate yourself on the subject
Result – Never get out of debt.
Try this out on some of your negative and self limiting thoughts. See what results you end up with.
This is why it’s so very important to notice these thoughts you have. Some questions you can ask yourself to reframe these thoughts are:
- How do I want to feel?
- What thoughts can help me feel this way?
- What results would I have if I changed these thoughts?
Influence Of Lifestyle and Environment On Mindset
What influence does your lifestyle and environment have?
You Are The Average Of The Five People You Spend The Most Time With
Maarten van Doorn
Who do you spend the most time with? Really think about those people you talk to and hang out with the most. What do you spend your time with them doing? What do you talk about?
Is it usually a bitch fest? Do you spend your time with them complaining about your boss, your job, your coworkers, lack of money, kids, boyfriend, husband, etc…?
If you did the exercise above, where you wrote your thoughts down, I bet those thoughts were probably similar to these conversations.
Cultivate friendships with those who already have the mindset and lifestyle you desire. You’ll find your conversations will be drastically different from what you’re used to.
Where Is Your Focus?
Changing the things you focus on will change the thoughts you have. Like we learned above, your thoughts are ultimately what determines the outcome you have.
If you spend your day focusing on your negative self talk and limiting beliefs, how you feel, and the actions you take in your life will reflect that.
In order to get different results in your life, it’s important to focus on different things.
- Focus on positives
- Stop obsessing over the news
- Stop hanging out with complainers and negative people
- When you notice negativity in your own thoughts, have a positive mantra or affirmation ready to replace it
- Think about the things you’re grateful for. Take it a step further. Ask yourself why you’re grateful for them
- Start and end your day right with an activity that focuses your thoughts towards positivity
Find something you can do each morning and evening that will set you up for success.
Some things you can try:
- Quiet time
What Is Your Mindset?
Take a moment to think about different areas of your life.
- Personal growth
What thoughts do you have about them? How do these thoughts make you feel? How do you want to feel about them? What thoughts can help you feel this way? What action steps can you take to achieve this change?
When questioning your negative or self limiting thoughts in these areas, challenge yourself to figure out where they came from. This will give you a greater understanding of yourself.
